Coope Boyes and Simpson
The trio formed around 1990 and are widely regarded as one of the best acapella trios on the planet. For more than twenty years they have sung in clubs at festivals and on theatre stages; their harmonies are intricate but never deflect from the meaning of the songs they sing, whether it’s one of their own songs like Down Upon The Dugout Floor, songs by other writers like Bill Caddick’s One Hand On The Radio or traditional songs like Hawkstow Grange.
For many years now they have been involved with the Peace Concert productions in Belgium and England, and have taken the shows to former battlefields like Passchendaele.
They have also worked with Michael Morpurgo, the Childrens’ Laureate, on such productions as Private Peaceful and their most recent double album, In Flanders Field, which combines their own writing with the First World War Tommy’s own often sardonic humour.
Through their involvement with the record company “No Masters” and working with other musicians of the Left like Chumbawumba, Fi Fraser, Jo Freya and Georgina Boyes, they have made a series of albums that have rightfully become classics.
